Silent Saturday – Saturday, April 16, 2022
Jesus was in the tomb.
He preached to the spirits in prison.
For Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; which he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly did not obey when God’s patience waited. (2 Peter 3:18-20)
There is a lot of discussion about what Christ may or may not have done on Saturday. Some use this verse to postulate that Jesus preached the gospel to the Old Testament people who lived before Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Therefore, they had the opportunity of surrendering their lives to Christ as Lord and Savior.
Others teach that He went down into hell and experienced the horrors and suffering there. Maybe He just stayed in the tomb.
We just don’t know for certain what He was doing on Saturday.
Morning Prayer: Father God, we can’t begin to understand the mystery of this day when Jesus’ body lay in the tomb and the disciples waited together in wonder and in prayer. For all those times when we can’t see You at work, for all the hours of waiting between prayers and answers, for all the times we walk by faith, we thank You that You’re patient with our restless wondering. You are at work even when we don’t see you. Increase our faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Evening Prayer: Father God, tonight we come before You with silence. In the stillness, may we sense Your presence and know You are near. Jesus will never love us nor forsake us. We know this full well. He demonstrated His love on the cross and we receive that love tonight. We praise You and honor You in silence and in peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
